| Ann Waterfall was born in Deptford in 1845, the
6th child of John and Martha Waterfall. Her mother died when she was 9 years
old. Her father remarried 5 years later when she was 14. By the age of 15
Ann was working as a servant at the 5 Bells Public House in Deptford,
lodging away from home. In 1863, when she was 18, her father emigrated to
Salt Lake City with his 2nd wife.
Ann continued working as a servant until she married John Gibson, a sailor, about 9 years her senior in 1874. In both the 1881 and 1891 Census records she is head of the family - John presumably away at sea - living in Deptford. By 1901, they are living with their married daughter in East Ham - John is with her, occupation Ship's Steward. The photo on the right shows 3 Waterfall sisters - at a guess from the ages, Ann may be on the right but not certain! WH Fawn was at 13 Evelyn Street, Deptford from 1887-1902 according to this directory. Ann would have been aged 42 in 1887. Her sisters were all older than her: Martha (b.1834), Eliza Emma (b.1838), Elizabeth (b.1843) and also potentially her step-sister Emma Vine (b.1843, daughter of Rebecca Langdon who married John Waterfall in 1859). Martha Waterfall died in 1874 so it is Eliza Emma (49?) and Elizabeth (54?) who are most likely shown with Ann. |
