Origins and Meaning

Our Gibson family have been traced back to Scotland, but as yet no mention of which part in particular.

There is a meaning of the surname here: "The son of Gib or Gilbert." from An Etymological Dictionary of Family and Christian Names With an Essay on their Derivation and Import; Arthur, William, M.A.; New York, NY: Sheldon, Blake, Bleeker & CO., 1857.
The name "Gilbert" is German in origin from Gisle "a pledge" or Geele "yellow".

OR a different meaning here: "A patronymic name meaning "son of Gibb," which in Middle English was a familiar term for a cat."
