Samuel Furr was my great, great grandfather. He was born in Dartford, Kent. By the time he was about 2, the family started moving closer to London and settled in Bromley and later Lambeth. Samuel seems to have had several changes of profession: starting as a news vendor assistant, then taking his father's trade of shoemaker, then becoming a butcher, later a fishmonger and finally an ostler groom when he was old. He married Martha Chapman, the daughter of a Thames lighterman from a long line of lightermen. They had at least 8 children, 2 sadly dying in infancy. I am descended from his daughter Alice. The family moved from around Bermondsey to Mitcham and later Streatham. Samuel died in Wandsworth infirmary in 1906, having had an accident with a horse and cart. |
